in the period 1880 through 1888 known as the cotton battle time so much cotton was shipped from Cornelius to Liverpool England that this area was nicknamed Liverpool.  It was not until 1893 at the town came into existence after JR Stow relocated part of his Davidson cotton business outside the town limits were he to do his own cotton way unhampered by Davidson's newly hired town weigher.  Stowe had so many farmers bringing on cotton because they didn't want to go to Davidson having to trudge up the muddy hill.  Since he was getting all this cotton he had an idea to convert it to cloth.  They didn't have the money to spare but they met knew the man who did, Benjamin Cornelius of Davidson.  Soon the cotton mill opened and the talent took its name from the principal stockholder incorporating as the Cornelius in 1905.

The town's original cotton mill now called foamex Macs remains a strong manufacture.  Many other aspects of the nearly as have changed though.  Cornelius now counts 16,227 residents.  Upscale communities such as the peninsula have developed into hundreds of homes and retailers have followed the jet and village and many other shopping centers lining the town's main thoroughfare.
