Nearly two million people come to see the lights at McAdenville every Christmas. This tradition began over 50 years ago when the Men's Club of McAdenville and the owners of Stowe-Pharr Mill came up with the idea of generating Christmas spirit by decorating a few trees around town. Both Mr. Stowe and Mr. Pharr not only supported the idea but offered to pay for the decorations and electricity. Those nine decorated trees have grown every year to now include almost every tree in McAdenville, making this tiny town of 615 people "Christmastown USA." During the holidays the town is transformed by thousands of lightsa sight you shouldn't miss. You'll find the reflection of red, blue, green, and white lights upon the little pond near the town's center especially beautiful.
Like many aging textile towns, this small community is beginning to grow after years of no change at all. Old Mill homes are being replaced, and several hundred new residents are moving in. The city enacted its first property tax in 2004.
But the Christmas lights tradition? That will never change.
