Mooresville Home Inspection and History

Mooresville is named for John Moore, a wealthy farmer and merchant who donated land for a railroad depot and cotton-weighing platform in 1857. The only catch? Moore insisted that the proposed 60-foot-wide streets be changed to 40-foot widths so they wouldn't cut into his cotton fields, and that Main Street curve away from the railroad tracks in order for him to sit on his front porch after lunch to see if passing wagons were stopping at his store across from the depot.
Except for the absence of wagons and the addition of utility poles, nothing much has changed the architecture or the atmosphere of downtown Mooresville since those early days. The same color awnings and glass front have remained at D. E. Turner Hardware since it moved to its "new location" across from the depot on Main Street in 1902. Inside, the original now-sagging wood floor, same wooden counters, and a rolling 20-foot wood ladder make you feel like time has stood stilland that's the way people like it. A frozen treat from Mooresville Ice Cream Company completes this tradition.
What has changed has been an improvement for the Iredell County town of nearly 30,000 residents. The railroad depot was recycled into an arts center, and a Citizen Center was built with an auditorium, exercise pool, and banquet facilities for 500 people. New shops, including a cooking store and an upscale bakery, now share the street with longtime businesses like D. E. Turner Hardware and Landmark Galleries, home of watercolorist and Mooresville native Cotton Ketchie.

Mooresville's real growtha 102 percent population jump in the last decade-has occurred closer to 1-77 and Lake Norman, west of the old downtown. Upscale neighborhoods such as The Point have million-dollar Nantucket-architecture homes set on the lake and around the 18-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman. Family farms are giving way to new subdivisions and shopping centers.

Mooresville went from a rail road stop to a Textile town to Race City USA, - through years of change Mooresville has kept its past in high regard. The town was founded in the 1850's and still has many of its orginal building downtown.

1899 - D.E. Turner & Co. Hardware Store

DE Turner is believed to have the first orginal gas pumps.  If you are downtown Mooresville stroll into DE Turner and you will see some of the store's original merchandise including Red Rider BB Guns and Radio Flyer Wagons.

They look out the second floor of the Howard, Brawley & Co. Store on North Broad Street, where their switchboard was located. The firm of merchants and cotton buyers was established in 1902;

1939 - Mooresville Public Library

The Mooresville Public Library opened in December 1939 on the site of the J. Elbery Sherrill home place on South Main. A gift to the town from Mrs. S. Clay Williams
(the former Lutelle Sherrill) the library was built on the footprint of her home in the neo-classical style.
