Monroe Home Inspection and News

One of the fastest-growing counties in the state, Union County draws newcomers with peaceful farms, rolling countryside, and friendly people. Monroe, a charming southern small town, in Union County, is located about 25 miles from the border of south Mecklenburg County. Monroe has undergone a successful downtown revital-ization. The 1888 redbrick county courthouse on the town square has been refurbished, along with several shops and homes in the downtown area. Businesses and special events such as festivals and outdoor concerts are being established. The Blooming Arts Festival is held the first weekend of May in downtown Monroe. The earliest inhabitants of the area were Native Americans of the Waxhaw tribe, part of the Catawba Nation. German, English, and Scots-Irish settlers moved here in the 1800s. Union County was carved out of Anson and Mecklenburg Counties in 1842; the city of Monroe was incorporated in 1844. In the 1990s Monroe's population jumped by 63 percent, and since 2000 it has continued to rise to a total of 30,392. Dealing with the immense growth has been challenging, as longtime locals and newcomers fight to keep their small town small.
The area has many diverse industries, including manufacturing facilities for heat-treated metal alloys, door closers, aircraft and automobile parts, and textiles. Cotton was Union's cash crop for many years, and you'll still find family-operated farmssome of them more than a century old. Dairy farms dot the northeast end of Union; horse farms make up the south. Poultry, soybeans, corn, beef, swine, and other agricultural products are also produced here. Wingate University, a four-year institution with a unique approach to education, is located in nearby Wingate. The Jesse Helms Center, a 26,000-square-foot tribute to the Monroe native and U.S. senator, displays the longtime Republican leader's memorabilia in Wingate. Cane Creek Park in southern Union has more than 1,000 acres with playgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, fishing, swimming, horseback riding, camping, and minigolf for kids. Theater, music, and the visual arts also flourish in Monroe.
